6 Reasons Why Fall is the Perfect Season for Roofing

If you need roof repairs or a replacement, fall is the perfect season to complete the job!

Is your roof in need of repairs or a full replacement? If so, fall is the perfect season for roofing projects to be completed, after the heat and storms of summer-time and before the temperatures drop below freezing. Completing your roof installation in the fall provides great weather and gives you the chance to prepare your house for snow, ice, and the freezing temps that seem to linger forever. Homeowners everywhere are catching on to the fact that September through November is the best season for replacing or repairing your roof. Here are the 6 top reasons why:

1 - The Stormy Season has Ended…Finally! – Spring and summer weather is more likely to bring on heavy storms, hurricanes, and situations with high winds. All of which can damage your shingles and/or roof without you knowing. Once the summer weather has dissipated it’s a good idea to assess any damage that may have occurred during the stormy months. This will allow your roofing contractor to determine what roofing services are necessary if any. Drier weather during autumn months is perfect for roof work since rain can cause delays as well as impact the quality of the work.

2 - Perfect…or at Least Really Close to Perfect Conditions – New roofing is best installed when the temperature ranges between 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, even roofing experts agree on this. This is particularly true if your roofers are installing asphalt shingles which are the most commonly used type of roofing material. This temperature range helps facilitate better sealing of the shingles, making SURE that they firmly adhere to the roof.

3 - Shingles are Much Harder to Work with the Winter Temperatures – Shingles can and will become brittle and are much more likely to break when roofers are nailing them to the roof in freezing temperatures. Attempting to replace or repair a roof in the winter can cause delays and higher costs due to having to skip certain days if it’s way too cold and because of the number of damaged shingles that can no longer be used.

4 - Proper Sealing – When you complete your roofing project in the fall, new shingles have time to adequately bond to the roof before the wet, cold, winter weather arrives. This helps to better insulate your home from cold temperatures and moisture.

5 - Winter’s Stormy Weather – If your roof is already damaged (and you don’t know about it, or even if you do) winter weather can make the damages even worse. This means holes can get larger and leaks can get worse. If you live in an area that receives a lot of snowfall and have a roof that is already compromised, you could be looking at way more than just a minor roof repair or replacement. A compromised roof has a much higher chance of caving into your home with all the additional weight accumulated snow provides.

6 - Save on your Heating Bill – By re-roofing during fall months, you’ll definitely benefit from a better-insulated home when the cold weather hits. A new roof can help reduce most heating bills, which could possibly offset a small portion of the cost of renovations or repairs.

While some homeowners still wait for the winter or spring months to begin their roofing project, thinking it will result in lower prices and better availability, that’s not always true. Many roofers work other jobs or take their vacations during these months because the industry as a whole slows drastically. We recommend not getting caught off guard during storm season here in Tennessee. Schedule a roof inspection at least once a year as a precaution and fall is the perfect time to do so!
